Construction of the monastery (first called Lechnicki) began in 1330. Initially, the buildings of the monastery were made of wood. However, in 1360 they were replaced by brick and stone buildings, erected according to the principles of the Gothic style. From the color of the originally unplastered walls, the building is named "Red Monastery". The history of the monastery was very turbulent - it struggled with numerous invasions, changes of owners, as well as expansions under the Camaldolese regime, thanks to which it gained its now historic polychrome and new baroque decor with a beautiful altar. Outstanding book works also come from this period. In 1907 the monastery burned down. Its reconstruction began after the First World War. In the years 1955 - 1966 construction works on the reconstruction of the monastery were carried out. Since 1966, some of its buildings have been used for museum purposes. The most impressive building of the complex is the Gothic St. Anthony Church from the end of the 14th century, which has been largely reconstructed in the Baroque style. It is worthwhile to visit the Red Monastery on foot or by bike following the Pieniny path along the Dunajec river. It is a picturesque route, ideal for families, from which we can admire the beauty of Pieniny nature, and in the season rafting Dunajcm. The Monastery can also be reached by car.
